Three teams from Taitokerau represented at NZ Māori Hockey Nationals which was held in Nelson over the October long weekend. For two years they have been waiting to challenge the (7) rohe that are represented from all over NZ. Covid played a miserable part in this period of disruption and change, but very evident two years has had its advantages in bringing through another generation of eligible Māori rangatira, to the already strong ranks of the Tai Tokerau teams as15 players had their debut with Tai Tokerau (highlighted in blue) this year!!
Success to the Wahine A team in making the finals against Aotea, just losing the game by 1 goal - nothing wrong with a silver medal. Great live streaming from Local Gecko Productions and you can still look at this coverage on the NZ Māori Hockey website or Facebook links. Brad Pitman once again the best commentator in the country and knows all the players, coaches and a few umpiring decisions.
Taitokerau Wahine B - had 9 new players attending for their first tournament. Along with 3 more experienced players - an experience to be remembered. These players are just waiting till next year to trial for the top team.
Taitokerau Tane - played off for 5th and 6th and lost on a penalty shoot-out. Our Tane were strong contenders and certainly did not make it easy for the other teams. Only a losing to Tamaki-Makaurau 0-2 in cross-overs, the Tamaki team going on to win the tournament.
