Leading into the summer break, you may have noticed trucks and heavy machinery around the Whangārei ITM Hockey Centre. The Educare Turf replacement project kicked off the first of two scheduled major facility upgrades.
Before everyone went into holiday mode, the old turf was pulled up with the asphalt painstackingly scrapped cleaned and ready to receive the replacement shock pad and carpet early January. A massive thank you for the team at Golden Bay Cement who disposed of the old rubber. Processing involves shredding to suitable size through their processing unit, then it is burned at ~1000 degrees. This reduces the volume of coal required to fuel the plant, diverts waste from landfill and the normal pollutants that result from burning rubbers are captured within the end product so overall it was perfect in supporting our effort to be more environmentally friendly.
In January work recommenced seeing the new Regupol rubber shock pad laid before getting turf lines marked out in anticipation of the TigerTurf WETT Pro in familiar green and brick colour theme.
It didn't take too long once the first centre strip was down and we began to see quick progress with the cartpet down ready for a final sign off ready for use in February.
The second project is the Lumosa LED Light upgrade on both Educare and Currie Turfs which ran cocurrently starting early January. The pallets of boxes arrived and arranged according to their respective poles
The Lights are almost complete with only a few poles left on Eves and final adjustments bringing much improoved lighting across all three turfs providing not only a more enjoyable experience but a safer one.
