Lenco and Hockey Northland are pleased to offer subsidised Goalkeeping Coaching Sessions with Simon Mason — Great Britain Hockey’s most capped goalkeeper and widely recognised as one of the sport’s best goalkeepers of all time.

Underneath his modesty is a man with extraordinary passion, knowledge, and talent for the game. Simon represented Great Britain at:

Three Olympic Games

Three World Cups

Three European Championships

Two Commonwealth Games

This is a rare opportunity for goalkeepers at all levels to learn from one of the very best in the world.

 Cost: $35 per session

 Limited spaces available – early registration is recommended

 Monday 23rd March – Baileys Turf Whangarei ITM Hockey Centre

 4:00pm – Beginner Session (1.5 Hours)

Objective: Introduce basic stance, movement, and save techniques.

Session Focus:

Basic stance and movement fundamentals

Kicking and foot saves

Stationary and moving ball kick saves

Rebound control with feet

Hand and stick-hand saving drills

Sweep stick clearances and recovery to feet

Basic combination drills

Diving safely – body positioning and managing ground impact

Introduction to low roll diving and secondary saves

 6:00pm – Intermediate / Advanced Session (1.5–2 Hours )

Objective: Improve reaction speed, positioning, and multi-save recovery.

Intermediate Focus

Includes all beginner components, with added emphasis on:

Power kicking and movement for primary shots

Positioning in the circle under pressure

Multiple ball saves on either side of the body

Getting up quickly and recovery saves on both sides

Core strength and rotational movement

Preparing for deflections and recovery

Full diving drills

Penalty Corner (PC) positioning

Advanced Focus

(Delivered depending on group and player capability)

Movement from posts, reverse step, and Argentinean block

Rebounds from penalty corner shots

“Ugly zone” recovery

Two-ball scenarios: first shot, second ball placed for rebound

Lunge save and recovery

Backhand shot positioning

Adding a rebound – “Mason Alley”

PC defensive set-up

Keeper communication and leadership (organising defence)
