Announcement of Hockey Northland CEO

PRESS RELEASE  11.03.24

Shannon McNab, Board Chairperson for Hockey Northland, has today announced the appointment of Tama Jones as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).  “With over 15 years of dedicated service in the sports sector, predominantly in the Te Tai Tokerau region, Tama brings a wealth of experience and a demonstrated passion for community engagement through sport.”

“Tama’s appointment marks a significant succession milestone for Hockey Northland as we farewell our long-serving CEO, Grant McLeod, who is retiring in April.”   Moving forward, says McNab, Hockey Northland, similar to other organisations, seeks to navigate ongoing participation challenges, financial sustainability and environmental stewardship.  To achieve this, we need an aspirational attitude and strong operational leadership and execution.  “Tama’s extensive background in sports management, strategic planning and relationship-based management roles underpin his skill base to lead Hockey Northland into a new era of growth and excellence.”

Tama’s career trajectory reflects his commitment to sports development and management.  Prior to joining Hockey Northland, he served as the Community Hockey Manager: Participation at Hockey New Zealand, providing strategic leadership in enhancing hockey participation and engagement nationwide.  His tenure at Sport Northland, first as a Community Sport Advisor and later as the CoachFORCE Manager, supports his expertise in grassroots sports development.

In addition to his professional achievements, Tama holds a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation, a Bachelor of Business (Marketing), and a Diploma in Sport and Recreation from Auckland University of Technology.  He also holds a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) from The University of Auckland.

“The Hockey Northland Board is delighted to welcome Tama Jones as CEO to lead our Hockey Northland community from 22nd April 2024.”
